of attempted murder of his girlfriend

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

On Monday, the police from the San Rafael District station in Alajuela Province arrested a U.S. citizen man surnamed Brenes, 31, on suspicion of domestic violence and attempted murder of his girlfriend.

According to the police report, on Sunday, a 911 alert was received, regarding a possible case of family violence in the home of Brenes and his girlfriend located in a condominium in the San Rafael District.

"Upon arrival at the scene, officers hear gun detonations inside the house so they don't think twice and throw the front door of the house to help the woman," the police report said.

Inside the house, Brenes threatened the police officers with the weapon, but "he was quickly controlled and detained, " said the police.

At the scene, the police found at least 12 firearm shells allegedly hit with the same gun the suspect had.

In addition to the arrest of the man, the police seized the gun as part of the evidence in the case.

The woman had not received any bullet injuries, however, she was in a state of shock.

"Thanks to the rapid response from the police, a probable femicide case at the site was controlled," the police said.

Police did not report the surname or nationality of the woman.

The foreigner was taken to the Alajuela Domestic Violence Court, where he was interrogated by the judicial agents and after that, he must wait until a judge orders the pre-trial measures against him.

This is the second case of arrest of a U.S. citizen during the weekend.

On Saturday, as part of the so-called patrolling police operations taking place across the country, a U.S. citizen man surname Smith was detained on suspicions of money laundering and illegal drug possession.

According to the police report, during a routine patrol in the area of
Ciudadela 25 de Julio in the Hatillo District in San José Province, a foreigner was detained who was traveling through the area by taxi.

"The man in the presence of the police was very nervous," said the police. That was a red flag for the officers who decided to review the taxi and the backpack the foreigner was carrying.

In his belongings, the police found ¢16,000 in cash. When asked about the origin of the money, the foreigner "could not explain to the authorities present the origin of the money," according to the police report.

In the foreigner’s backpack, authorities found illegal substances of marijuana and cocaine.

The man was taken to the cells of the Public Ministry where he was interrogated by the judicial agents, where he must now wait until a judge orders the pre-trial measures against him.
