In the 15th edition of the Latin American Film Festival in Australia, the movie The Gazelle's Dance, by the Costa Rican Director Iván Porras Meléndez, was presented.

The festival is organized every year by the embassies of Latin American countries, with the sponsorship of the Council on Australia Latin America Relations.

"The Gazelle's Dance: Eugenio's dream is to win a big trophy, but he could never achieve it as a football player. Now he is 72 years old and he sees a chance to fulfill his dream through a tropical dance contest. But when he loses his partner halfway through the contest, his only chance of winning will be forcing him to deal with his preconceived notions," said the festival organizers about the film. "He'll trade the ball for a hall. Together with Carmen, his dance partner, and friend of a day center for the elderly, he strives to learn the steps of salsa, cumbia, and bolero".

According to the embassy of Costa Rica in Australia, the Australian public, "demanding and cold as it is," applauded on Monday, August 12th at the end of the screening of The Gazelle's Dance. "The public at the Fenner Center of the National University of Australia in Canberra responded with spontaneous warmth to the work of Iván Porras Meléndez."

The Latin American Film Festival in Australia (LAFF) presents a selection of 14 movies representing Latin America.

The embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay have partnered to bring the festival to cities throughout the country. This year, LAFF will reach 12 of them, including many in regional Australia.

"LAFF is an annual festival carefully curated to bring to different cities around Australia the beauties of Latin American culture," said the festival organizers in its statement.

The list of films that are presented at the festival, can be seen on LAFF site here.*
