As of Tuesday, Costa Rica has applied 3,848,155 vaccines against covid-19, reaching a national vaccination rate of 74.5 per 100 inhabitants, according to the Vaccine National Information System report. Of these, 2,948,584 people have received their first dose, approximately 53% of the country's population. And 899,571 people have completed their two-dose treatment, approximately 17% of the population. The 3.8 million include 15,712 people who received the covid-19 vaccine abroad. Of these, 98% received the vaccines in the United States. The majority chose to be inoculated with the Johnson & Johnson dose (48%) and Pfizer (42%), according to statistics from the Ministry of Health. At least 83% of the population, about 4,274,344 million people in Costa Rica, must be fully vaccinated to keep infections down and achieve herd immunity, according to Social Security. Currently, the vaccination campaign is focused on people over the age of 20 with no health issues in public hospitals, clinics, universities, supermarkets, among other places. According to the authorities, the vaccine is only available in the country to nationals or residency DIMEX card holders. There is also an opportunity for people who are in the residency process and have not yet received approval. They must provide their passport and a document provided by the General Directorate of Migration. It is advised for people to first visit their local Ebais to get information on the vaccination program for that specific area or by calling the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000. ![]() As of Friday, Costa Rica has received 4,595,985 vaccines against covid-19, according to the National Emergency Commission. The authorities are expecting the arrival of an additional 69,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines that will be donated by Spain. This donation should allow to inoculate approximately 38,800 people, President Carlos Alvarado said. In the country, there are 77,633 active covid-19 cases. Of the total 434,081 cases detected since last year, there were 5,269 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.2% death rate in Costa Rica, according to the Health Ministry report on Tuesday.
