As of Tuesday, there have been 3,643,508 vaccines against covid-19 applied in the country, reaching a national vaccination rate of 70.6 per 100 inhabitants, according to the Vaccine National Information System report.

Of these, only 2,780,658 people have received their first dose, approximately 53% of the country's population. And 862,851 people have completed their two-dose treatment, approximately 17% of the population.

At least 83% of the population, about 4,274,344 million people in Costa Rica, must be fully vaccinated to keep infections down and achieve herd immunity, according to Social Security.

Currently, the vaccination campaign is focused on people over the age of 20 with no health issues. According to the authorities, the vaccine is only available to nationals and people in the country who are residents (DIMEX) or their passport and a document provided by  the General Directorate of Migration that indicates the residency process is almost approved.

It is advised for people to first visit their local Ebais to get information on the vaccination program for that specific area or by calling the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000.

Public hospitals will also be carrying out the vaccines, as well as some malls, supermarkets and clinics.

This week, the government announced the 69,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines that will be donated by Spain to inoculate approximately 38,800 people.

In June the government announced an agreement signed between Spain and Costa Rica on politics, health, cybersecurity and tourism among others, during a visit by the visit of the President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez.

The announcement of the donation was made by President Carlos Alvarado, adding that treatment will be sent to the country through the COVAX mechanism, which is the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access of the World Health Organization. The date on which this donation will arrive has not been announced yet.

The first country to donate vaccines to Costa Rica was the United States. According to the Social Security, the treatment was applied from July 16 to 25.

As of Friday, the country has received 4,361,985 vaccines against covid-19, according to the National Emergency Commission.

In the country, there are 73,406 active covid-19 cases. Of the total 422,344 cases detected since last year, there were 5,169 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately 1.2% death rate in Costa Rica, according to the Health Ministry report on Tuesday.

The pandemic has killed more than 4.3 million people at a global level, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.
