This year, from January to March 15, police report having received 266 thievery complaints of items left inside cars while they were parked in public areas around San José Province.
The most recent case happened on Wednesday when the agents of the Judicial Investigation Organization detained a man as a suspect of stealing a cell phone left inside a car parked near La Sabana Park.
According to the agents' report, during an operation that the judicial agents were carrying out, they observed a man who was inside of a car acting suspicious.
Agents stopped and searched the man’s bag, finding a cell phone matching a phone that was reported robbed a few minutes earlier in the same place.
After a more detailed inspection, agents realized that the cell phone was the same one that the victim had reported stolen. The victim left his cell phone inside his car.
The man was arrested and taken to the Public Ministry where he must wait for a judge to determine the pre-trial measures as a suspect of robbery.
According to the agents, people can take simple precautions to avoid being robbed:
• Avoid parking your car in public areas.
• Use parking lots that have security officers, especially if the car has external accessories such as racks.
• Never leave your personal belongings in the car.
If you must save any item inside the car, do not leave it visible, it is better to keep it in the car trunk.
Always lock the car.
