1.5 tons of garbage removed
from rivers in San José By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Friday, volunteers, municipal workers and representatives of foundations finished the waste collection campaign in the two rivers of San José, removing 1,523 kilograms of garbage. The cleaning works were carried out in the Torres and María Aguila rivers that cross the capital. This is part of the Clean Rivers Strategy program, which seeks to release pollution and recover urban rivers and their surroundings. The trash clean-ups were carried out in the areas where the rivers flow through the cantons of La Unión, Curridabat, Goicoechea, Montes de Oca, San José downtown, Tibás and Alajuelita. The cleaning strategy is developed by the Ministry of the Environment with the help of local municipalities and foundations, with the goal of cleaning all the river flows in urban areas by 2030. According to the ministry, more than 30 organizations are dedicated to reducing pollution, garbage collection and tree planting on the river’s banks. The first day of garbage collection began on Friday, Dec. 4, where 1,040 kilograms of garbage from the rivers were obtained. On the second cleaning day that ended on Friday, 483 kilograms of garbage were removed. Both activities were carried out in compliance with the health protection guidelines against covid-19, the ministry said.
