Published Wednesday, October 21, 2020 1,200-plus health workers in trouble
for participating in a strike By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Despite knowing that strikes in the public health sector are illegal, following the Labor Code, 1,272 health workers did not work to participate in the strike that took place on Monday in San José, reported Social Security. The institution began the process of gathering evidence from each of the workers who were on strike, to apply the corresponding sanctions. According to Social Security, of the total number of employees that went on strike, 911 work in hospitals, 284 in community clinics and 77 in other areas. The health services were affected, so it was necessary to reorganize the roles of the employees who remained at work in addition to hiring private food and laundry services, Social Security said. The institution presented the case to the Labor Court to request for the official declaration of illegality of the strike and then proceed with the disciplinary sanctions. These penalties could be applied in approximately 10 days, Wady Vega Solís, Social Security lawyer said. If the Labor Court confirms the strike illegal, it could be the second case of an unlawful protest by Social Security employees this year. Recently, the Labor Court declared a strike organized by laundry service employees illegal. Meanwhile, the rest of the healthcare workers continue to attend increasing amounts of patients infected with the virus that continues to cause daily deaths in the country. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported the following updated statistics of the covid-19 contagion in the country: • 847 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 36,591 active cases. • 16,127 foreign-born people have been infected with a total of 97,922 cases since March, approximately 16.4% of the total cases. Of these, authorities confirmed the death of 32 foreign-born patients. • 542 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 215 patients are in ICU’s in delicate health conditions (ages range from a 1-year-old to a 91-year-old). And 327 patients are in recovery rooms. Many of the remaining infected patients are quarantined in their homes. • 60,190 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 61.4% recovery rate of the total cases since March. • 1,222 deaths of people infected with covid-19, approximately 1.2% death rate of the total cases since March. Of these 465 women and 757 men. The ages range from a 9-year-old to a 100-year-old person. Since Friday, Oct. 16, authorities stopped providing the updated statistics on people who have been ruled out and the number of medical covid-19 tests that have been made. Readers can see the updated number of total patients in each district at the National Distance Education University on its Covid-19 Map. As of Tuesday night, the pandemic has killed 1,123,203 patients worldwide, according to recent statistics reported by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering, CSSE, at Johns Hopkins University. ---------------------- What should health authorities do to avoid more strikes?
