"Save 2 lives" - the slogan of anti-abortion protesters |
|
By A.M. Costa Rica wire services
Under
the main motto "Let's save the 2
lives," members of more than 50
organizations paraded down Second
Avenue to voice their position against
abortion.
“Yes to life!” “We support the mother and the son!” “We do this for love!” “No to abortion!” were all slogans shouted by the protesters. The primary position of the protesters is the belief that life begins at the moment of conception and that abortion should be considered murder. Juan de Dios Calderón, one of the organizers said we “should take care of life - that is one of the most important rights of the human being.” The demonstration on Avenida Segunda progressed to the Plaza de la Democracia, blocking traffic for many hours on Saturday morning.

Pride parade demands approval of equal marriage |
|
By A.M. Costa Rica
staff
With
posters, music and drag shows, the LGBTI
organizations of the country demanded
the approval of equal marriage in a
demonstration that took place Saturday
in front of the Plaza de la Justicia at
the center of San José. The event
blocked the San José main downtown
street during the morning.
The Constitutional Chamber reported that the magistrates should resolve two citizen complaints in the next days both of which center on the approval of gay marriage in Costa Rica. These resolutions could legalize marriage between people of the same sex. The group of organizations and civilians gathered on Saturday to demand that the magistrates allow the union and to keep the issue in the public eye. "What we call the magistrates to be coherent with two things: the legal reality and the social reality of the country. We can no longer evade the fact that the country has homo-parental families, diverse families and that there are pending same-sex couples to be recognized before society," said Geovanny Delgado, spokesperson for the National Movement for Equal Marriage. The event involves gay groups, homo-parental families, organizations representing the transgender population and family and friends of this population. The protest called for the prompt resolution in the constitutional chamber and wants that chamber to adhere to the provisions of advisory opinion of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which obliged the state of Costa Rica to assure the LGBTI population the same rights as the heterosexual population.

The event blocked the San José main downtown street during the morning.
"We are full of
optimism. We do not find a resolution different from
that of complying with the opinion of the court," said
Nisa Sanz, spokesperson for the Families Homo-parentales
Organization.
The court cases at constitutional chamber were filed in 2015 and 2016. The cases ask that two articles of national legislation be declared unconstitutional. One article states that marriage shall be between a man and a woman and the other prohibits unions between people of the same sex.

Diana Ojeda
Herrera, 30, died at home in
Moravia, surrounded by her parents
and siblings.
Ms Herrera suffered from disease epidermolysis bullosa dystrophic, which affects the integrity of the skin causing it to blister and peel easily. The skin is unable to tolerate any sort of friction and the movement of clothing against the skin can cause painful irritation and exposure to the sun is usually forbidden. In extreme cases, amputations are necessary due to the severe erosion of the skin. Most sufferers die before their 20th birthday. The disease is rare and only one of every 100,000 suffer from it. Because of her condition, the woman was called the butterfly skin woman in the local media. César Ojeda, Diana's brother, said "My sister was a person who never in her life complained, despite the injuries and sufferings that she had constantly. The EB not only destroyed her skin externally, but also internally, but she never complained, on the contrary, she always had a smile," he said. One of the
woman's greatest wishes, according
to her brother, was knowing what
it felt like to be in the sea,
however, because of her condition,
she could never go to the beach.
She always wanted to know how it would feel to be inside the sea, Ojeda said. She told you that you had to keep going, figthing, and, because of her way of being and speaking, she reflected that God was with her, only with the fact of having to endure the wounds in her body. I never heard my sister say that ir was not worth living, in fact, she managed to live up to 30 years.

Ojeda
added, people usually complain about small
things, light scratches, beacause the weather
is ugly or beacause the sun came out radiant,
but exemplary people like his sister, on the
contrary, give thnks to God for life. |
