By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The increase of tour rides with motor vehicles, such as motorcycles, 4x4 cars or ATV quads on the beaches is giving a wrong perception that these activities are legal. However, in Costa Rica, a person who drives on the seashore with any type of motor vehicle could be fined about $90, according to the Traffic Law. People can use their boats, surfboards, or water scooters on the seashore, taking due precautions to avoid accidents with people around them. But motor vehicles are only allowed to carry the boats and others water vehicles on the shores. Traffic Police officers call on people not to participate in or book ride tours on the beaches. It’s a safety precaution to avoid the fine and the risk of causing accidents to people on the beach.  The exception to driving on the beach is when a special permit is granted by the General Directorate of Transit. Without that permit, people cannot drive any vehicle on the beach. Another exception applies to vehicles of the police or Red Cross. The third exception allows vehicles to disembark shipping cargo but with a permit provided by the Ministry of Transport. Due to the restriction orders established by the National Emergency Commission to try to contain the spread of covid-19, the beaches can be visited from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. any day of the week.
