This year 1.5 million people will get the influenza vaccine. According to Social Security, in order to comply with the campaign, they budgeted $8,455,400, for the purchase of the doses, plus expenses to coordinate the application process throughout the country.

In Costa Rica, the yearly flu vaccination campaign has been carried out since 2004. This year, it is expected that the vaccines will be applied at community clinics beginning today.

The campaign will cover the so-called vulnerable population as children ranging in ages from 6 months to 7 years old, adults older than 58 ( including expats residents), people between 7 to 57 years old with health conditions (for example: diabetic patients, obesity, heart disease and respiratory diseases) and pregnant women.

The rest of the Social Security affiliates must buy the flu vaccine for this season in private clinics.

According to Social Security, influenza is a common viral respiratory disease that spreads easily from person to person and causes complications, sometimes resulting fatal, even for healthy people.

Its symptoms start suddenly and among them are chills, muscle and throat pain, poor general condition, normally high fever, and fatigue. Its complications can be serious (pneumonia) and could even lead to death. The virus can survive for three days and spreads by touch.

Social Security advises that "vaccination is the best defense against influenza."

People may contact the nearest Social Security public clinic, known as Ebais, to receive the vaccine and avoid increasing the risk of contagion of this viral infection. It may increase the risk of developing a more severe pulmonary disease.

Due to the pandemic and with the goal of reducing the risk of catching covid-19, the treatment will be applied in areas designated exclusively for the flu vaccination campaign.

Should Social Security provide the flu vaccine to all its affiliates?
