$62 million-plus approved in
potable water projects for Limón

The Public Water Institute announced an investment of $62,904,705 in potable water projects and improvement of the pipeline system that are being carried out in Limón Province.

According to the institute, the investment is divided into 11 potable water projects, of which three have been completed this year. Five are under execution and three more are in process.

The three projects completed this year provide potable water to 74,200 people. These are the pipelines in the indigenous communities of Alto Bley and Bekbatä, in Talamanca, and Kuchey de Tayní in Valle de la Estrella, as well as a new well for the Guápiles aqueduct.

There are five projects still under construction for the Puerto Viejo sanitary sewer system that provides drinking water to more than 4,000 people. "Since the start of works in June, 1.7 kilometers of pipe have been installed out of the 10.9 kilometers that will be laid," the institute said.

A part of the project is pending the process of contracting the company in charge of the design and construction of the Puerto Viejo wastewater treatment plant.

Other projects in execution include two aqueducts in Bratsi de Talamanca for the indigenous communities of Akberie, Chase and Batallón; and San Miguel, San Vicente and Sibujú.

In La Rita de Pococí, a new well is also being built to provide drinking water to 3,000 people.

In Limón, the Puerto Viejo sanitary sewer system is being executed for the benefit of more than 4,000 people.

Still pending, is the project to expand the sanitary sewer system in the city of Limón, which is in the design phase. The project will double the connections to the sanitation system from 7,700 to 15,700 homes and increase the coverage area from 303 to 816 hectares.

Another pending project is wastewater management in Tortuguero. In addition to providing drinking water to 1,500 people with the construction of a new well in Cahuita.
