$2.5 million investment for improvements at Palmar Sur airport By

The Civil Aviation Technical Council and the General Directorate of Civil Aviation announced an investment of $2,542,285 financed with institution resources for improvements to the Palmar Sur airport* in the Osa region, in the south-western part of the country. According to the council, the reopening of the airport will be soon announced. The improvements being made are the reconstruction of the entire airstrip, it will be 18 meters wide and 1300 meters long from the runway area. Also, the administrative building with its respective parking area was built, the security of the fence was increased, lighting for the horizontal boundary and the landing strip were completed. According to Guillermo Hoppe, Director General of Civil Aviation, the improvement of this airport will improve service for tourists and thereby improve the economy of the area, because there is now rapid access to the region. All of this investment is part of an effort for local airports to comply with the standards and recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization, said Hoppe. In June, the council announced the advances in other rural airports improvements as follows: - Golfito Airport*, located in the southern area of the province of Puntarenas, the remodeling is 95 percent complete with an investment of about $1,835,230 for remodeling the airstrip and the main building. - Pérez Zeledón Airport*, located in the south of San José, the remodeling is 95 percent complete, with an investment of about $375,387 in the construction of a new airport module and expansion of the aircraft parking platform. Others airports with infrastructure improvement projects are: - Guápiles Airport*, in the province of Limón, received an investment of about $2,501,625, for the reconstruction of the airstrip, improvement of security strips, horizontal demarcation, construction of a terminal module, repair for the perimeter fence and repair of pipes. The work is 25 percent complete. - La Managua airport in Quepos*, in the province of Puntarenas, with an investment of about $8,997,511. The entire building will be repaired, and there will be a platform for parking, an extension in the runway, improvements in security strips, track lighting, and a perimeter fence. In the case of the airport in Quepos, the airport has been closed since December 2017. In January 2018, the General Direction of Aviation canceled the contract with the company that was doing the remodeling, because it was not able to comply with the work specifications. Airport is open and the council is managing the works. - Drake Bay Airport*, in the Osa Peninsula, with an investment of $5,672,529, for improvement of the runway, the main building was modernized, a station platform for three aircraft was created, repairs to security strips and the perimeter fence was built. - Upala Airport*, in the Alajuela province, received an investment of $2,001,300 for expanding the runway, repairing the perimeter fence, and repairing pipes. It is estimated that it will be completed in 2020. - Tortuguero Airport*, in the province of Limón, received an investment of $2,501,625, for the expansion of the parking platform for three Bravo-type aircraft, a new terminal building, and a module for Ministry of Security officials. The airport should be completed in 2021. The General Directorate of Civil Aviation was created by law on October 26th, 1949.
