$2-plus million costs of improvements at Quepos airport

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Authorities of the Civil Aviation Technical Council are in the process of analyzing two national companies as candidates to make improvements at the La Managua airfield, in Quepos, in Puntarenas Province.

According to the council, the budget for the improvements is $2,665,698, which includes a new runway, an area for parking of Bravo-type aircraft, a wall on the perimeter of the airport and a stormwater system, among others.

The goal of these improvements is for the airport to meet "all the requirements established by the International Civil Aviation Organization in terms of security," said the Council in its statement.

According to the council, the company is expected to be hired in February. The company must make the improvements within 135 days.

La Managua airport in Quepos, is the third most important in the country in terms of connectivity and tourism, said the council.

In December  the minister of Public Transport, Rodolfo Méndez-Mata, announced a budget of $161 million for airport improvements for 2020 to 2024.

According to the minister, part of that budget, $95.9 million, will be used in improvements at the
Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste.

The improvements will be made in the reconstruction of the entire runway of almost 3 kilometers in length, the reconstruction of the electrical system and extensions of the area of the airport. These extensions will involve more expropriations of land near the airport, he said.

Also, $379,290 will be used for remodeling the radar building.

Some $2.4 million more will be used in improvement that will be made during the next four years for the construction of a wall along the perimeter of the airport as well as other security improvements.

Méndez said that $1.6 million has been invested in renovations on the current runway and its painting, among other improvements.

For
Tobías Bolaños International Airport, in Pavas, San José, Méndez projected an investment on improvements of $18.7 million this year. For next year, a budget of $7.4 million was approved.

"All these efforts, in airports with international flights, seek to cope with the increase in the demand for air visitation so that the country remains competitive in this matter," said Méndez.

Álvaro Vargas, general director of Civil Aviation, also reported on the latest improvements in some airports.

In the airport of
Golfito, in the southern zone of the country, $1.1 million was invested this year in improvements in the runaway and the security walls around the airport. An additional $553,940 in improvements were made to the building.

In the airport at
Palmar Sur, also in the southern zone of the country, $2.6 million was invested this year in the widening of the runway from 12 to 18 meters and remodeling of the building, among other improvements.

In the airport of
Coto 47, in the southern zone of the country, near the border with Panamá, $635,091 is being invested to build a hangar for National Air Surveillance Service planes. This hangar and other improvements are expected to be completed in three months.

In the airport of
Pérez Zeledón, in the southern zone of the country, $583,931 was invested in improvements to the building.

In the
Guapiles airport, $2.9 million was invested in building improvements. Also, $2.3 million will be invested next year for the construction of a hangar and rooms for the officers of the National Air Surveillance Service.

At the airport in
Drake Bay, on the Pacific coast of the country, $6 million was allocated to the extension of the runway, others improvements in the building, the construction of a station platform for three planes and improvement in the security zone, among others, Vargas said.

What another local airport should the ministry invest in improvements?
