After discontinuing the school year in May, due to a rapid increase in infections of covid-19, the Ministry of Education announced the reopening of schools as of Monday, July 12. Students will have available a hybrid system between in-person and virtual classes.

Parents have final say if students partake in the hybrid system or remain strictly virtual with their courses.

One aspect parents are considering in their decision are the driving restrictions, which impact their mobility during the week. And driving students to school is not included on the list of exemptions for not abiding the ban-on-driving rule.

Parents should contact the school principal and send a letter of their decision to continue with virtual classes. Otherwise, the school or high-school staff will register the student's for mixed classes.

According to Giselle Cruz, Minister of Education, the option to continue virtually was established at the beginning of the school year in February and "the possibility of not sending students to in-person lessons is still an option."getting infected with covid-19, students must keep a social distance of 6 feet, practice constant hand-washing and mandatory use of a face mask.

To avoid getting infected with covid-19 at school students must keep a social distance of 6 feet, constant hand-washing and mandatory use of a face mask. If someone is detected or suspected of being infected with covid-19, the school must close until a deep cleaning of all the facilities is completed, according to the authorities.

Resuming in-person classes was authorized after having achieved the vaccination of 96.69% of the ministry's employees, meaning approximately 85,896 employees have received at least one of the two doses of the vaccine against covid-19.

Due to the pause in the school year of almost two months, an educational leveling plan was developed that would allow students to advance in their education to the best of their ability during the pandemic.

According to statistics provided by the ministry, in Costa Rica there are 1,186,824 students who will continue with the school year ending January 19, 2022.

This reopening will be monitored and updated, depending on the development of the virus in the country.

There are 70,612 active covid-19 cases in the country. Of the total 377,091 cases detected since last year, there were 4,753 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately 1.3% death rate in Costa Rica, reported the Health Ministry on Wednesday.
