U.S. Secretary of
State Marco Rubio is set to visit Costa
Rica next week to meet with President
Rodrigo Chaves-Robles, according to an
announcement made Thursday by U.S. State
Department spokeswoman Tammy
Bruce. Rubio’s itinerary
includes stops in Panama, Guatemala, El
Salvador and the Dominican Republic, as
part of a diplomatic tour beginning late
next week. According to a
report published by Voice of America
(VOA), the visit
coincides with President Donald Trump’s
ongoing push to reclaim control of the
Panama Canal and the U.S. government’s
efforts to address illegal migration in
the region. The trip will mark
Rubio’s first international tour as
Secretary of State, with a primary focus
on strengthening U.S. relations within
the Western Hemisphere. “Engaging with our
neighbors is a vital element in
addressing migration, supply chains, and
economic growth,” a State Department
spokesperson told VOA. “These are key
priorities in Secretary Rubio’s foreign
policy agenda, which focuses on ensuring
America’s strength, prosperity, and
security.” President Trump
has stated that he is considering
military and economic measures to
advance his goal of regaining U.S.
control over the Panama Canal. Earlier this week,
Rubio outlined his foreign policy
objectives, which include reducing the
influx of undocumented migrants entering
the United States. “The State
Department will no longer engage in
activities that facilitate or encourage
mass migration,” Rubio said in a
statement. “Our diplomatic relations
with other nations, particularly in the
Western Hemisphere, will focus on
securing America’s borders, curbing
illegal migration, and negotiating the
return of illegal immigrants to their
home countries.”
Rubio
will be the fourth U.S. Secretary of State
to visit Costa Rica in the past 14
years.
