This year, there has been an increase in passenger traffic at the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), which is situated in the Alajuela Province.

The airport administration company, Aeris, reported that as of June, over 2.8 million passengers had been registered at the terminal.

This number represents a 23% rise in the number of travelers registered at the airport in comparison to the same time frame in 2022.

Furthermore, it indicates a growth of 5% in comparison to 2019, before the pandemic brought the country to a halt.

All international airlines that were operating at the airport before the pandemic have now resumed their services and even increased the frequency of their flights. Recently, American Airlines, a major U.S.-based airline headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, launched new flights between Costa Rica and Miami.

Authorities have projected that tourism will officially reach 2019 statistics this year.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. As of June, more than 1.3 million tourists have visited the country.  The number marks a new record compared to the number of visitors registered in the country in the same period in 2019, the year before the covid-19 pandemic.

Last year, about 2.3 million tourists visited the country. That is one million more visitors than in 2021.
