Tico athlete wins gold medal in Japan

Sherman Güity-Güity, a tico paralympic athlete (a term used for a native of Costa Ricaearned a gold medal in the 100-meter sprint race at the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships, which are being held this week in Japan's Kobe University Memorial Stadium.

According to the Institute of Sports, Güity participated in the T64 category, which includes athletes who compete in speed and have had a leg amputated.

Güity set a record of 10.82 seconds. "He was far superior to his rivals, crossing the finish line ahead of the United States team," the institute noted in a statement.

Hunter Woodhall of the United States finished in second place, clocking in at 11.13 seconds. Derek Loccident, also from the United States, came in third with an 11.40-second record.

Güity was born in Limón Province on December 3, 1996. He has excelled in racing contests at the National Sports Games since he was a child.

He lost part of his left leg in an August 2017 vehicle accident. Despite this, his drive and perseverance led him to continue doing sports during his rehabilitation time.

The award-winning athlete specializes in 100 and 200-meter competitions for athletes with impairments.

Güity joins an elite group of Costa Rican athletes who have won international competitions.   Early this month, Camila Haase-Quirós, a 23-year-old tica swimmer, earned two gold medals and two silver medals in the 2024 Open International Swimming Championships, which took place in Spain.
