Ligia Madrigal, 51, a tica athlete (a term used for Costa Ricans) is the first Costa Rican woman to reach the Mount Everest summit, the world's tallest mountain.
Mount Everest is the world's highest peak summit, rising more than 8,800 meters above sea level in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas in the China-Nepal border.

Madrigal's
husband, Federico Escalante, confirmed
at 5 p.m. on Wednesday that she had
successfully climbed to the mountain's
highest peak. This after having begun
her journey from Costa Rica to the top
of the peak on April 7. "She has
been an athlete who has faced enormous
challenges but she has always triumphed
over them," Escalante stated in his
statement. "Conquering Everest was her major pursuing goal, the idea came to her mind, and she did it."
This was
Madrigal's second attempt to reach the
world's highest mountain after she had
to postpone her ascent in 2023 when
she was less than a kilometer from the
top. Madrigal's
other accomplishments include reaching
the highest peak in the Americas,
Aconcagua Mountain, located in
Argentina's Andes mountain range, with
a summit elevation of more than 6,900
meters above sea level, in 2022. She also
ascended Costa Rica's highest peak,
Chirripó Mountain, numerous times a
year in preparation for his Everest
expedition. Costa Rica's tallest peak,
El Chirripó, is more than 3,800 meters
above sea level. Madrigal
is the second Costa Rican to climb the
world's highest mountain. Warner
Rojas, a professional athlete, became
the first Costa Rican to climb Mount
Everest in 2012.
