On Friday


 


The National Symphony Orchestra will offer one Christmas concert at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Guadalupe, San José. The free concert begins at 7 p.m.




The Puntarenas Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at the
Finca Life facilities in Monteverde Canton. The free and pet-friendly show starts at 7 p.m.




The Guanacaste Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at Hojancha Municipality Amphitheater. The free and pet-friendly show starts at 3 p.m.




The National Network of Music Education Orchestra of Alajuela will perform a Christmas concert at
Turrucares Canton Central Park in Alajuela.  The free and pet-friendly show starts at 4 p.m.




The National Network of Music Education Orchestra of Limon will perform a Christmas concert at Eddy Bermudez Public Gym in Limon Beach.  The free and pet-friendly show starts at 5 p.m.




The National Network of Music Education Orchestra of Pococi Canton will perform a Christmas concert at the orchestra facilities in Limon.  The free show starts at 6 p.m.




The Cartago Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at the Cartago City Municipality Amphitheater. The free and pet-friendly show starts at 6:30 p.m.




The Alajuela Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at
the Carmen Catholic Church in Alajuela City. The free show starts at 7 p.m.




The National Dance Company Show will be held at
the Alberto Cañas Escalante Theater in San José. The program begins at 7 p.m. Tickets for $10 are available at the theater box office.




The Layt and Layf Christmas Festival is
taking place in Vargas Central Park in Limon Beach. The festival includes a children's play area, parades, food and souvenir sales, and a concert by the MasterKey Ensemble. The free activity begins at 10 a.m.












On Saturday







The Municipality of San José will hold the Christmas Lights Festival. This is a major Christmas event in the country featuring professionally built floats and bands parading through San José streets from Paseo Colón Ave. to  Democracy Square. The free event begins at 3 p.m.




The National Network of Music Education Orchestra of Desamparados Canton will perform a Christmas concert at Santa Cruz Park in Leon Cortes District in San José.  The free and pet-friendly show starts at 11 a.m.




The National Network of Music Education Orchestra of Limon Canton will perform a Christmas concert at  Vargas Central Park in Limon Beach.  The free and pet-friendly show starts at 2:30 p.m.




The National Network of Music Education Orchestra of Puntarenas Canton will perform a Christmas concert at the Puntarenas Municipality Amphitheater.  The free and pet-friendly show starts at 4 p.m.




The National Network of Music Education Orchestra of Alajuela Canton will perform a Christmas concert at the Los Angeles public gym in Grecia Canton.  The free show starts at 5:30 p.m.




Liberia Fest will be held at the Cámara de Ganaderos complex in Liberia Canton, Guanacaste. The event includes games, sports, live music, dancing shows, and locally manufactured merchandise for sale. The free admission event kicks off at 10 a.m. The festival closes with several bands' concerts at 6 p.m. Tickets at $45 and may be purchased at the venue's box office or through the Ticketsite website.











On Saturday and Sunday


 



The "Chucheca de Oro Theater Festival" will
take place at Casa de la Cultura in Puntarenas City. The free shows begin at 5 p.m.






The Torres Theater in downtown San José is now showing "Crhistmas Dreams," play for kids. The performance starts at 3 p.m.  Tickets are $15 at the theater box office.







 




On Sunday




The Puntarenas Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at the Esparza Canton Central Park. The free and pet-friendly show starts at 10 a.m.




The San José Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at the Dulce Nombre Catholic Church in Tres Rios District. The free show starts at 10 a.m.




The Guanacaste Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at the Plaza Liberia Center. The free show starts at 3 p.m.




The Alajuela Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at
Carmen Catholic Church in Alajuela City. The free show starts at 6 p.m.




The Limon Township Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert at the
Catedral Catholic Church in Limon Beach. The free show starts at 6 p.m. 









This weekend



The Christmas play "On the Cypress Tree Branches," features Danzay and Teatralia companies at the National Theater in San José. The ballet portrays the narrative of Christmas ornaments living on a Christmas tree come to life. The show begins at 8 p.m. on Friday. On Sunday, the two shows begin at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets range in price from $30 to $80 and are available at the theater box office or online.




The Melico Salazar Theater in San José is presenting "The Nutcracker," inspired by the 1892 two-act classical ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. On Friday and Saturday, the program begins at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the shows begin at noon and at 5 p.m. Tickets range from $40 to $90 and are available at the theater's box office or the Eticket website.







 


The Espressivo Theater, in San José, presents "A Christmas Carol," based on the novella by Charles Dickens. On Friday, the play starts at 8 p.m. On Saturday, it starts at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. On Sunday, the program starts at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.  Tickets are $30 and available on the theater website.





The Lucho Barahona Theater in downtown San José is now showing "The Mummy," a funny performance with the comedian characters Juan Vainas and Chibolo. The play, based on a Halloween story, seeks to answer the following question: what would you do if you discovered a sarcophagus buried in your backyard? Friday and Saturday, the performance starts at 8 p.m. Sunday's show begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the theater box office.








"Doña Elvira," comedy performance playing in the Triciclo Theater, in downtown San José. It is a comedy about a couple on vacation who, due to an unexpected circumstance, must travel with their mother-in-law. On Friday and Sunday, the show starts at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the comedy begins at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available at the theater box office.



The comedy play "No Job, No Money" is playing at the Molière Theater in downtown San José. The comedy follows a group of friends who must go to crazy lengths to make ends meet. On Friday and Saturday, the show starts at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the comedy begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at the theater box office.









Libertad Park Club in Desamparados in San José presents activities for teenagers such as painting, dance, music, sports and arts. The free and pet-friendly event begins at 9 a.m.





Children's Museum in downtown San José features special activities for kids. The museum opens at 9 a.m. Tickets $3 are available on the museum's website




Tours are available at the Wildlife Rescue Center in Barrio San José District in Alajuela. The animal sanctuary and wildlife conservation center tours include botanical gardens and more than 125 species of rescued animals including sloths, monkeys, jaguars, tapir, birds, and reptiles. They cannot be released back to their natural habitat. Tickets are $30 or $15 per child available on the center's website.











Tours are available at Kids Saving the Rainforest Wildlife Sanctuary in Quepos Beach, Puntarenas. The non-profit organization is home to nearly 50 animals that cannot be released back into the wild. Ticket is $10. Make reservations by emailing Chip@kstr.org or calling 8827-8243.







Experience the arrival of sea turtles at Ostional National Park in Guanacaste, beginning at 6:30 a.m. with an expert guide from the Ostional Tourist Guides Association. Tour price $8.













Games for children, playgrounds and pools are available at Punta Pirata Beach Club in Puntarenas City, Puntarenas. Doors open at 8 a.m. Ticket is $16.



Free swimming, Zumba, aerobics, sports games, fitness and diving are among many other courses at Ojo de Agua Water Park in San Antonio Belen, Heredia. The club includes a parking area, restaurant, several swimming pools for adults and a swimming pool area for children, a playground, tennis areas, basketball areas and a soccer field. The place opens at 7:30 a.m. Ticket is $3.





Kalambu Hot Springs Water Park in La Fortuna, Alajuela, offers more than 10 aquatic activities and hot spring pools. The park opens at 10 a.m. Tickets are $8 or $13 including lunch. Free for children under 4 years old.








Go ride hopping at the Parque de Diversiones in La Uruca, San José. The amusement park has more than 17 rides such as roller coasters, carousels, twists and bumper cars among many others. Enjoy their food court zone and picnic area. The park opens at 9 a.m. Ticket is $20. For more information visit the park's website.







System of Conservation Areas invites visitors to the Chirripó National Parks in Cartago and Limon, Poás Volcano in Alajuela, Tortuguero in Limon, San Lucas Island in Puntarenas, Irazú Volcano in Cartago and Manuel Antonio Beach in Puntarenas. Make reservations on the organization's website.




Guanacaste Conservation Area invites visitors to both the Santa Rosa and the Horizon Experimental Forest Station in Guanacaste. Tickets are available on the organization's website.






Diquis Museum in Palmar Sur, Osa, Puntarenas, offers walking tours through the archaeological zone known as Finca Sitio 6. Tours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ticket is $7 and must be paid by credit or debit card.







Lankester Botanical Gardens, a set of gardens located in Dulce Nombre, Cartago opens at 9 a.m. Ticket is $10  and is available on site.




The Art Museum in downtown La Sabana, San José, presents private collections of Latin American artists. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ticket is $15.


National Museum in downtown San José, presents an exhibition of Costa Rica's history and handmade artifacts, including some more than 12,000 years old, made by the first peoples of the region. Museum hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ticket is $11.



Gold Museum in downtown San José presents an exhibition of Costa Rican bills and coins since 1850. Also, in the exhibit are the 700 pieces of handcrafted gold made by the first population in Costa Rica. The museum opens at 9 a.m. Ticket is $15.
