On Friday


 

The Heredia Township Band will perform a folk music concert at the San Lorenzo Hacienda in Heredia.  The free and pet-friendly concert starts at 9 a.m.




The Cartago Township Band will perform a folk music concert at the Municipality Anphiteather in Cartago City.   The free event starts at 6:30 p.m. Reserve your seat online.




The Alajuela Township Band will perform a folk music concert at El Llano Church in Alajuela.  The free and pet-friendly concert starts at 7 p.m.
















On Friday and Saturday





The Juan Santamaría Museum in Alajuela Province will hold the "Senior Festival." On Friday, a free concert with the Municipality band starts at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Suria Choir and Los Fabulosos band will give a free concert at 3 p.m.









On Friday and Sunday




Mark Kosower, principal cellist of the Cleveland City Orchestra in Ohio, U.S.A., will present a cello concerto by Antonín Dvorak featuring the National Symphony Orchestra, led by U.S. conductor Sharon Lavery, director of the Downey Symphony Orchestra in California, U.S. The show will be held at the National Theater in downtown San José. On Friday, the show begins at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the program begins at 10:30 a.m. Tickets start at $15 and are available at the theater box office or online.










On Saturday




Ecko Music Festival will be held at the Lake Golf Club in Lindora City, Santa Ana, San Jose. The event, which starts at noon, features 18 international performers and 14 hours of dance music. Tickets for $35.00 are available on the Star Ticket website.




Aventura, an American band from The Bronx, New York, will play a Latin music concert as part of their "Closing Cycles" word tour. The show will take place at the National Stadium in San José. The program begins at 8 p.m. Tickets ranging from $50 to $490 are available on the Smart Ticket website.




The Eugene O'Neill Theater in San José will broadcast "Les Contes D'Hoffmann Opera." An ensemble of leading lights takes the stage for Offenbach’s fantastical final work, headlined by tenor Benjamin Bernheim in the title role of the tormented poet. Hoffmann’s trio of lovers are sung by soprano Erin Morley as the mechanical doll Olympia, soprano Pretty Yende as the plagued diva Antonia, and mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine as the Venetian seductress Giulietta. Marco Armiliato conducts Bartlett Sher’s evocative production, which also features bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as the Four Villains and mezzo-soprano Vasilisa Berzhanskaya in an important company debut as Hoffmann’s friend Nicklausse. The show begins at 10:50 a.m. Tickets for $25 are available at the theater box office or online.









 




On Sunday




The San José Township Band will perform a folk music concert at Ofelia Carvajal nursing home in Alajuela.  The free concert starts at 10 a.m.




The Eugene O'Neill Theater in San José will present the Symphonic Rock Concert, featuring the Costa Rica Orchestra paying tribute to legendary rock bands such as Metallica, Nirvana, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Led Zeppelin, among others. The program starts at 5 p.m. Tickets for $18 are available at the theater box office or online.









This weekend





Oktober Fest Costa Rica will take place at the Pedregal Events Center in  Heredia. The festival includes live music, dance performances, games, over 150 different beer brands, and traditional German cuisine. On Friday, the celebration starts at 5 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, it will start at noon. Tickets vary from $25 to $50 and are available on the Star ticket website.




The Expressivo Theater in San José presents "Frankenstein Musical," based on Mary Shelley's novel. The play is suitable for all ages. The show begins at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It starts at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets cost $24 and are available at the theater box office or online.

The Arlequin Theater, in downtown San José, presents "Bill W. and Dr. Bob," based on the original piece written by Stephen Bergman and Janet Surrey in 2007. In Costa Rica, the play is directed by Darren L. Cole, an American. It is based on the tale of William Wilson (Bill W.) and Dr. Robert Smith (Bob S., or "Dr. Bob"), the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, and their spouses Lois Wilson and Anne Smith, who founded Al-Anon. On Friday and Saturday, the performance begins at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the program begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are available for $15 at the theater box office.





The Lucho Barahona Theater in downtown San José is now showing "The Mummy," a funny performance with the comedian characters Juan Vainas and Chibolo. The play, based on a Halloween story, seeks to answer the following question: what would you do if you discovered a sarcophagus buried in your backyard? Friday and Saturday, the performance starts at 8 p.m. Sunday's show begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the theater box office.










"Suegras Barbaras," or "Crazy Mothers-in-Law," is a comedy performance playing in the Triciclo Theater, in downtown San José. It is a comedy about a couple on vacation who, due to an unexpected circumstance, must travel with their mother-in-law. On Friday and Saturday, the show starts at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the comedy begins at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available at the theater box office.






The comedy play "No Job, No Money" is playing at the Molière Theater in downtown San José. The comedy follows a group of friends who must go to crazy lengths to make ends meet. On Friday and Saturday, the show starts at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the comedy begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at the theater box office.




La Máscara Theater in downtown San José offers the comedy "We Both", about two friends, Elvirilla and Marcelenda, who reconnect after many years apart. On Friday and Saturday, the show begins at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the comedy starts at 7 p.m. Tickets for $15 are available at the theater box office.

Libertad Park Club in Desamparados in San José presents activities for teenagers such as painting, dance, music, sports and arts. The free and pet-friendly event begins at 9 a.m.





Children's Museum in downtown San José features special activities for kids. The museum opens at 9 a.m. Tickets $3 are available on the museum's website










Tours are available at the Wildlife Rescue Center in Barrio San José District in Alajuela. The animal sanctuary and wildlife conservation center tours include botanical gardens and more than 125 species of rescued animals including sloths, monkeys, jaguars, tapir, birds, and reptiles. They cannot be released back to their natural habitat. Tickets are $30 or $15 per child available on the center's website.




Tours are available at Kids Saving the Rainforest Wildlife Sanctuary in Quepos Beach, Puntarenas. The non-profit organization is home to nearly 50 animals that cannot be released back into the wild. Ticket is $10. Make reservations by emailing Chip@kstr.org or calling 8827-8243.












Experience the arrival of sea turtles at Ostional National Park in Guanacaste, beginning at 6:30 a.m. with an expert guide from the Ostional Tourist Guides Association. Tour price $8.




Games for children, playgrounds and pools are available at Punta Pirata Beach Club in Puntarenas City, Puntarenas. Doors open at 8 a.m. Ticket is $16.



Free swimming, Zumba, aerobics, sports games, fitness and diving are among many other courses at Ojo de Agua Water Park in San Antonio Belen, Heredia. The club includes a parking area, restaurant, several swimming pools for adults and a swimming pool area for children, a playground, tennis areas, basketball areas and a soccer field. The place opens at 7:30 a.m. Ticket is $3. 




Kalambu Hot Springs Water Park in La Fortuna, Alajuela, offers more than 10 aquatic activities and hot spring pools. The park opens at 10 a.m. Tickets are $8 or $13 including lunch. Free for children under 4 years old.



Go ride hopping at the Parque de Diversiones in La Uruca, San José. The amusement park has more than 17 rides such as roller coasters, carousels, twists and bumper cars among many others. Enjoy their food court zone and picnic area. The park opens at 9 a.m. Ticket is $11. For more information visit the park's website.










System of Conservation Areas invites visitors to the Chirripó National Parks in Cartago and Limon, Poás Volcano in Alajuela, Tortuguero in Limon, San Lucas Island in Puntarenas, Irazú Volcano in Cartago and Manuel Antonio Beach in Puntarenas. Make reservations on the organization's website.




Guanacaste Conservation Area invites visitors to both the Santa Rosa and the Horizon Experimental Forest Station in Guanacaste. Tickets are available on the organization's website.




Diquis Museum in Palmar Sur, Osa, Puntarenas, offers walking tours through the archaeological zone known as Finca Sitio 6. Tours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ticket is $7 and must be paid by credit or debit card.








Lankester Botanical Gardens, a set of gardens located in Dulce Nombre, Cartago opens at 9 a.m. Ticket is $10  and is available on site.




The Art Museum in downtown La Sabana, San José, presents private collections of Latin American artists. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ticket is $15.


National Museum in downtown San José, presents an exhibition of Costa Rica's history and handmade artifacts, including some more than 12,000 years old, made by the first peoples of the region. Museum hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ticket is $11.






Gold Museum in downtown San José presents an exhibition of Costa Rican bills and coins since 1850. Also, in the exhibit are the 700 pieces of handcrafted gold made by the first population in Costa Rica. The museum opens at 9 a.m. Ticket is $15.
