San José City recognized as a budget-friendly spring break destination

Costa Rica's San José City has been included in the top ten most affordable spring break destinations for U.S. families in 2025, according to a recent report by Dollar Flight Club, a subscription service that tracks flight deals.



Spring Break usually occurs between the first and last weeks of March, with some institutions extending into early April.



The report, titled The Most Affordable Spring Break Destinations for Families 2025, analyzed several factors, including average airfare prices, hotel rates, weather conditions, and the availability of family-friendly attractions such as parks, museums, and cultural sites.



Based on their findings, San José emerged as the seventh place of budget-friendly city for U.S. spring breakers this year, with an average roundtrip airfare of just $215.



"Costa Rica is perfect for affordable rainforest adventures," reads the report. "Visit eco-lodges or Airbnbs to save on lodging, and use public buses for cheap transportation. Waterfalls and national parks offer budget-friendly entrance fees, and farmers’ markets are great for low-cost, fresh meals."



Travel + Leisure magazine, which named Costa Rica the "Destination of the Year" for 2024, agrees with the recommendation, calling San José a must-visit.The city welcomes springtime travelers with mild dry-season temperatures and a vibrant local culture,the magazine noted.








Key attractions include the National Museum, the National Theater, the Art Museum, and the bustling Central Market. To keep costs low while soaking in thepura vida’ lifestyle, visitors can use public transportation and enjoy affordable meals at local farmers' markets, they added.



In addition to exploring the city, the report highlights San José as an ideal base for day trips to Costa Rica’s natural wonders, including Poás Volcano National Park, Hacienda Doka coffee estate, and La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park among others.



The report listed the top six destinations: Montego Bay(Jamaica), Orlando (U.S.), Cancun (Mexico), San Diego (U.S.) Aruba and Phoenix (U.S.).



In 2024, Costa Rica achieved foreign exchange earnings from the sector exceeding $5.4 billion, according to data from the Central Bank.



Tourism is a key sector of Costa Rica's economy. The country welcomed over 2.6 million tourists by air in 2024, a 7% increase compared to 2023.
