124 athletes will represent the country in
the Pan American Games Peru 2019

Some 124 athletes were sworn in to compete in the XVIII 2019 Pan American Games to be held in Lima, Peru, from July 26 to Sept. 1, The event was at the headquarters of the National Olympic Committee in Coronado*, San Jose.

"When you are there in Peru, remember at all times that you have a whole country behind," said President Carlos Alvarado during the swearing-in of the athletes. "Five million people who admire and defend you, the story of a small nation that never ceases to amaze with what it does," the president added.

Female soccer player Shirley Cruz and a male athlete of the Special Olympics, Sherman Güity, will representing the country in the opening of the games as flag bearers.

Costa Rica's participation in the 2019 Pan American Games will be in the competitions of swimming, athletics; badminton, bowling, boxing, gymnastics, soccer and 26 others sports.

The athletes received about $948,145 from the Ministry of Sports for the Costa Rican Olympic Committee to ensure the country's participation in the games.

Costa Rica has participated uninterruptedly in Pan American Games since its first edition in 1951 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, through the Toronto, Canada, competition in 2015. It has obtained a total of 20 medals: five gold, six silver, and nine bronze.

The 2019 Pan American Games are a multi-sport event governed by the Pan American Sports Organization. All 41 nations, including U.S.A. and Canada, that are members of the Pan American Sports Organization are expected to compete.
