The Red Cross completed its surveillance operation to respond to emergencies during the pilgrimage, which took place in Cartago Province on Friday, August 2, in honor of the Patron Saint Virgen De Los Angeles, also known as La Negrita.

According to the Diocese of Cartago, almost two million devoted Costa Ricans and travelers worldwide visited the Our Lady of the Angels Basilica.

The humanitarian group has set up 250 main assistance stations along the 22-kilometer pilgrimage route from San José to Cartago. About 1,200 rescuers, paramedics, volunteers and physicians were called up for this operation.

Pilgrimage operation statistics show that over 2,300 emergencies were attended.  One person was reported dead: a man over 40 years old who was hit by a trailer on the night of Thursday, August 1, in front of the Capuchin Church on the main route used by pilgrims to reach the La Negrita Basilica.

The rescue crew also transported 50 people to Cartago's Max Peralta Public Hospital owing to health problems.

The remaining emergencies were attributed to fatigue (2,000), minor trauma (140), burns (14), heart attacks (13), and car crashes (4), among others.
