Over 260 road accident deaths in Costa Rica

As of July, there were 264 deaths in traffic accidents, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT).


The Traffic Police statistics show that this year 32 fewer deaths were recorded, compared to 232 fatalities in the same period of 2023.



Of the total number of fatalities, 142 were motorcyclists (54%), 42 were drivers (15%), 18 were cyclists (6%), and the remainder fatalities were passengers,  individuals driving other types of vehicles or pedestrians.


According to officials, the leading causes of these road accidents were speeding (80 fatalities), crossing a designated line and driving on the wrong side against traffic (60 deaths) and reckless driving with 40 victims, among others.









People can report suspects of reckless driving by dialing the 9-1-1 emergency line.



Recently, more than 3,500 DUI tests were applied by Traffic Police. Of these, police identified over 600 drunk drivers.



Last year police reported over 500 deaths in traffic accidents. Of the total number of fatalities, 48% were motorcyclists.



The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) is an agency of the government in charge of roads, airports and maritime ports planning and construction. It also regulates public transportation.
