If foreign countries do not kick in and help remove their illegal citizens from the United States, they will be hit with high tariffs on their trade, Donald Trump said Thursday.

The former president and Republican presidential nominee spoke to reporters along the border of the U.S. state of Arizona with México. He was replying to a question from a reporter about what he would do if elected president again. Presumably, Costa Rica would be asked to help in the removal efforts of its citizens.

Trump also said that he had been warned not to make the trip to the border because the area is so dangerous.

Millions of foreigners have entered the United States illegally under the current Joe Biden administration. Trump faces Vice President Kamala Harris in the Nov. 5 presidential elections. She has
been considered to have been put in charge of the U.S. borders by Biden. Trump said that even many Democrats want the border closed, although the Democratic party leadership does not want that to happen.

Harris has promised
stronger efforts to cut down on illegal entries, and Trump has drawn criticism because he did not support a new border bill in the U.S. Congress. "I didn't need a bill," Trump said Thursday, reflecting on the border situation when he was president. "I just said 'Close the border,'" he said. He suggested that Vice President Harris could do likewise immediately.

Trump said that major U.S. cities
are filled with illegal immigrants, including New York and Chicago. He said that from the body language of officials in these cities, he knows they would support stronger border enforcement.

The majority of illegal entries have happened at the U.S. southern border, although the Biden Administration has been flying in Venezuelan and Nicaraguan asylum seekers. Trump ordered a wall erected when he was in office, but the current administration has left the project unfinished and has even welded gates open.
