The tourist transport minivan crash in Atenas Canton, Alajuela Province, on Sunday left no one dead.

According to a Red Cross Accidents Monitor Department report, around 1:30 p.m., they got a 911 call reporting an accident involving a minivan transporting seven foreign tourists and the driver, one Costa Rican.

Five emergency units, including four Red Cross ambulances and one firefighters truck, were dispatched to the accident location from stations in Atenas and Turrucares.

When rescuers arrived at the scene of the crash, they had to smash the Hyundai H-1 minivan's windows to get the occupants out.

All seven passengers were foreign tourists who got first aid. They were taken to the Atenas Public Clinic after suffering many injuries. The Costa Rican driver was also taken to the same clinic in serious condition.

Authorities did not disclose the tourist's names.

Firefighters later found a spill
had been the result of a fueling hose that had become disconnected from the car's gas tank. They cleaned the area to prevent fires caused by the fuel spill.

On Monday, Traffic police officers were analyzing the area to determine the possible causes of the crash.

As this is an ongoing investigation, the police will maintain the confidentiality of all related information. Only relatives of the injured tourists are authorized to request further details from the authorities.

As of July, there were 264 deaths in traffic accidents, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

In March, a male U.S. citizen identified as Breckimride (78) died in a car crash in San José Province.

Last year police reported over 500 deaths in traffic accidents. Of the total number of fatalities, 48% were motorcyclists.
