Netflix has produced a four-part series called "Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones," which explores the lifestyles of people over 100 years old living in the "Blue Zones" of Costa Rica.

The "Blue Zones" are regions around the world where people live significantly longer and healthier lives compared to the global average.

These areas have garnered attention for their high rates of centenarians (people who live for 100 years or more) and low rates of chronic diseases.

Netflix will stream this documentary on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

In the upcoming series, a chapter will focus on the blue zone situated in the Nicoya Peninsula. This area was visited by a Netflix production crew in March 2022, and filming locations included the cantons of Santa CruzCarrillo, and Nicoya.

The Supreme Court of Elections, which is responsible for maintaining an up-to-date record of the demographic data of Costa Rica, has reported that 58 individuals are over 100 years old residing in Guanacaste Province.

The regions with the highest number of living centenarians, known as blue zones, are Nicoya, Santa Cruz, Carrillo, Nandayure and Hojancha.

Furthermore, according to the Court records, 10 individuals living in those areas are currently 99 years old.

The term "Blue Zone" was coined by National Geographic Fellow and author Dan Buettner.

Key principles and habits from these Blue Zones that could contribute to living longer and healthier lives include:

Plant-Based Diet. Most Blue Zones emphasize plant-based diets rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. These diets are low in processed foods and emphasize natural, nutrient-dense ingredients.

Moderation in Eating. People in Blue Zones tend to practice moderation in their eating habits. They avoid overeating and practice mindful eating, stopping when they are satisfied rather than overly full.

Physical Activity. Regular physical activity is a common thread among Blue Zone populations. Engaging in daily, low-intensity activities like walking, gardening, and other forms of natural movement helps keep them active throughout their lives.

Strong Social Connections. Strong community and family ties are integral to life in Blue Zones. Regular social interactions and support networks contribute to reduced stress and a sense of belonging.

Sense of Purpose. Having a sense of purpose has been linked to longevity. People in Blue Zones often maintain strong passions, hobbies, or roles that give their lives meaning.

Stress Reduction. Many Blue Zone inhabitants have developed practices to manage stress, such as meditation, napping, or taking time for relaxation.

Cultural Practices. Each Blue Zone has its unique cultural practices and traditions that contribute to its overall lifestyle and longevity.

The documentary will also discuss other blue zones located in Japan, Italy, Greece and the United States.
