During an
anti-drug operation led by the Drug
Control Police, two Costa Ricans were
arrested on suspicion of owning a
marijuana farm indoors in a house
located in the Colonia District, in Río Cuarto Canton, Alajuela
Province.
The case began
when police received a confidential
crime tip about a property where
individuals were reportedly growing
marijuana, according to the Ministry of
Public Security.
When officers
entered the house, they discovered
plastic bags filled with marijuana, over 100
marijuana plants growing in pots,
flowers and seeds.
Everything was seized as evidence,
including cash and crop-growing
equipment.
At the place, two
suspects surnamed Molina and Mejías were taken into custody.
The suspects were
taken to the Alajuela Public Ministry's cells for
interrogation by judicial agents and now
await the judge’s orders regarding
pre-trial measures against them as
suspects of growing marijuana. Authorities call
for people to report any suspicion of
drug sales or trafficking to the
ten-digit confidential line 800-8000-645
or fast line 11-76, where bilingual
agents can answer calls in English or
Spanish. Costa Rica seized
43.5 tons of drugs and arrested over
190,000 offense suspects in 2023. In 2022, Costa Rica
legalized medicinal and therapeutic
cannabis and hemp for food and
industrial use. However,
recreational use, self-cultivation and
self-consumption of the cannabis plant
are still illegal in the country. The Ministry of
Public Security (MSP) is the government
agency in charge of ensuring citizen
security, preserving public order,
forming police units, and coordinating
anti-crime initiatives.
