A
beach access ramp for those with
disabilities is now available at Potrero
Beach in
Guanacaste Province.
The
33-meter path was
built by
the
Red Costarricense de Turismo Accessible
(Accessible Tourism Network in English language), a
non-governmental organization (NGO).
According
to the Institute of Tourism, the
project was developed
with the Dona Tapa organization (donate a
plastic lid in the English language) and
the help of the employees of Guanacaste
Municipality and private companies in the
collection of plastic lids.
The
builders applied eco-friendly techniques like
using
1,000 kilos of plastic lids to implement
retractable walkways and one amphibian
chair.
The retractable walkway and amphibian chair were delivered to the local office of the Potrero Beach Development Association. They are the entity in charge of installing the portable walkway. Access to the new path is open for visitors every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Costa
Rica enacted Law 7600 to enforce the
tourism industry to include access to
popular sites for people with
disabilities. This
includes places like hotels, theaters,
museums, volcanoes and national parks among
others.
There
are still challenges to be
met
regarding access to beaches for people
with physical disabilities, such as direct
access to the water, user-friendly
showers, parks or bathrooms, the institute
said in its statement.
Potrero
is the sixteen beach with an access
ramp to the water. Other accessible
beaches are in
Junquillal, Panama, Hermosa and Tamarindo
in Guanacaste Province. Additionally in
Puntarenas, Herradura, Jaco, Manuel
Antonio, Bandera, Espadilla and Hermosa de
Osa in Puntarenas Province. As
well as in Piuta, Cieneguita, Manzanillo
and Cahuita in Limón Province.
In
October, Costa Rica will host the 2024
Americas Social Tourism Summit.
This event also sets out to create an
additional space for the
exchange of
ideas, models and strategies through
collaboration and innovation to promote
and develop social tourism throughout the
Americas.
Tourism
is one of the most important economic
sectors in Costa Rica. Approximately
1.5 million tourists arrived in the
country via air between January and
June, representing a 14% rise over the
same period in 2023.
The
country reported a new tourism record
reached in 2023, with more than 2,4
million travelers.
