Traffic police on Monday reinstated driving restrictions based on license plate numbers in San José City, following a temporary suspension during the end-of-year holidays.

The restrictions were lifted on Dec. 23, 2024, due to lighter traffic caused by holiday closures of public institutions and private companies, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).

Starting on Monday, vehicles with specific license plate numbers, including cars, motorcycles, and trucks, are subject to restrictions on Route 39, also known as the Circunvalación Route, which circles the capital city.

Electric vehicles are exempt and may travel without limitations.

The restrictions are enforced Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. based on the last digit of the vehicle's license plate:

• Monday: Plates ending in 1 or 2.

• Tuesday: Plates ending in 3 or 4.

• Wednesday: Plates ending in 5 or 6.

• Thursday: Plates ending in 7 or 8.

• Friday: Plates ending in 9 or 0.

No restrictions apply on Saturdays and Sundays, allowing all vehicles to circulate freely.

Drivers who violate the rule face a $55 fine, according to the Traffic Law.

Fines for traffic violations were reduced this year after the Court Superior Council approved adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index.

Authorities reported 394 road deaths as of October 2024, with motorcyclists accounting for 52% of fatalities.

In 2023, more than 500 people died in traffic accidents.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) is a government agency responsible for planning and managing roads, airports, and maritime ports and also oversees public transportation regulations.
