If you’re up for a Costa Rican adventure, Arenal is one of the best places to be. You are surrounded by the potential for adventure. Here are some adventures that are close by:

• Zip Line and Tubing. Flying through the sky is fun on its own, but it’s even better when you combine it with getting your butt wet. Shoot through the sky and into the jungle, then make your way out by way of the inner tube. Bouncing from rock to rock and over rapids makes the zip line seem tame.

• Repel down a waterfall. Or three. There is nothing more beautiful than a waterfall, and not much more exciting than falling, even at a controlled rate. Combined? Magic.

• Wind Surf/Kiteboard. You are the wind, skating over the shining water. Lake Arenal is famous for windsurfing as well as kiteboarding. Flying through the lake in one of the most beautiful places on earth isn’t a bad way to spend a day.

• River Rafting. On the adventure scale, this may be at the top. Tumbling down a river in an inflatable raft is not only invigorating but also beautiful.

• Climb a mountain. Near La Fortuna is a peak that stands beside the Arenal Volcano. Clamor up rocks and vines to reach the top, and you are rewarded with a grand view of the immense volcano.

• Kayak/SUP. Find your inner mariner, and paddle the lake in a kayak or on a stand-up paddle board (SUP).

• Horseback riding. Dive into a jungle on the back of these elegant creatures. The trails are tricky and the horses wise. Cross rivers and summit the grand hills of this beautiful land.

• Fishing. Imagine having an entire lake to yourself as you cast your line out, with Arenal volcano as your backdrop. It may not be a high adventure, but it’s like nothing else in the world.
