Valentine's Day is celebrated today when couples and friends exchange greetings and presents to show their love.

However, the holiday did not start as a romantic day. The Roman Catholic Church claims that the origins of Valentine's Day may be traced back to St. Valentine, the patron saint of love.

Valentine was a Roman priest and physician who was martyred on February 14, AD 269, during Emperor Claudius II Gothicus' persecution of Christians. He signed letters "from your Valentine" to his jailer's daughter, whom he had befriended and cured of blindness. He also disobeyed the emperor's commands by secretly marrying couples to save the husbands from being recruited to fight in the war.

Valentine's Day is now mostly connected with romantic love. Couples are arranging romantic dates. Singles are hunting for dates or planning an anti-Valentine's Day.

Whatever the occasion is celebrated, A.M. Costa Rica has compiled a list of places to enjoy the most romantic day of the year.
