The public bank, Banco de Costa Rica (BCR), pushed for the option to make the departure tax payment through its website.

According to the bank, anyone can make the online exit payment, including people who do not have a bank or credit account with that financial institution.

The only requirement is to have a credit or debit card from any bank, whether issued by Visa or MasterCard, nationally or internationally.

In the case of the departure tax for leaving the country by land, it must be paid by the traveler, national or international. This tax is only charged to those leaving the country by land border posts.

The cost is $5 plus $2 for the X-ray scanning service or baggage inspection, plus $1 for additional inspection of suitcases, briefcases, and the disinfection or destruction of merchandise transported by travelers if that applies. The total tax is $8.

Payment can be made right on the bank's website before arriving at the border Migration post.

Travelers are required to enter personal information and an email address. After making the payment, the system will generate a receipt that will be sent to the traveler's email address and automatically copied to the General Directorate of Migration.

Travelers also have the option to pay in-person at one of the open bank offices at the border posts when the online payment cannot be done.
Travelers leaving by air are charged an airport service fee of $27 plus $2 for the cost of scanning baggage inspection. The total tax is $29.

The online payment for leaving by air is not yet available, but the traveler can pay the tax at any bank agency, either in cash or using VISA or Mastercard. The person must present their passport or ID to the cashier to legitimize the payment.

The BCR has an office in the main international airports, Juan Santamaría in Alajuela Province, Daniel Oduber in Guanacaste Province and Tobías Bolaños in San José Province, where the tax can be paid as well as other services such as currency exchange.

Since 2015, the departure tax has been included in the price of airline tickets of the Copa Airlines, KLM, Condor, Iberia, Volaris, Air France, Jet Blue, British Airways, Southwest, Air Canada, Aeromexico, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Wingo, Avianca, Spirit, and Edelweiss, among others.
