Costa Rica wins twelve medals in international games

The Costa Rica team won twelve medals at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, which took place in Chile and came to an end on Sunday, announced the Sports Institute.

Among the gold medal winners is Sherman Güity, who competed in the T64 category and won two gold medals in the 100-meter race and the 200-meter sprint, a division for speed athletes who have had a leg amputated.

Pilar Riveros earned another gold medal in the tournament for female archery athletes with vision disabilities in the T13 category.

Andrés Molina won gold in the para athletes competition in taekwondo.

Athletes Melissa Calvo in the 400-meter race, Camila Haase in the 100-meter swimming competition, Diego Quesada in the archery competition, Steven Román in the table tennis competition, and Paola Arana in the target shooting competition all earned silver medals.


Bronze medals were also won by Aneth Araya in the table tennis competition, Camila Haase in the 200-meter swimming race, and Steven Román and Domingo Argüello  playing doubles table tennis match.

The games, officially the XIX Pan American Games and commonly known as Santiago 2023, are an international multi-sport event governed by the Panam Sports Organization.

These are the first Pan American Games to be held in Chile and the eighth to be held in South America.

The games were held in 39 venues across the Santiago Metropolitan Region and another three regions of Chile.

The Para-athletics teams have joined the ranks of Costa Ricans who have won medals in international tournaments.  Last week, the Costa Rica team, both men and women, won the gold medal at the VI Central American Hockey Championship held in Guatemala.
