Costa Rica will host the Immersed in Change Summit that will take place from 7 to 8 June 2024 in the National Convention Center in Heredia Province.

The meeting will facilitate the exchange of best practices and successful experiences in ocean health and governance, in anticipation of the Third UN Ocean Conference to be held in Nice, France, in June 2025, to be co-hosted by Costa Rica and France.

"This event symbolizes the need to immerse into the ocean and take action to address its challenges. It represents the depth of the ocean and the importance of acting to preserve it. The conference aims to inspire individual and collective action to conserve the ocean," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its statement.

The summit goal is to emphasize the need for the Ocean conservation community to dive deep into individual and collective actions to restore and safeguard the Ocean.

The event will bring together experts in diverse fields to illustrate successful and replicable conservation actions.

Discussions will take place on topics such as the agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, the importance of sustainable use of the ocean and coastal marine biodiversity, and the role of technology in accelerating action for the ocean.

Covering more than 70% of our planet, the ocean is the origin and therefore responsible for all life on Earth. It plays a key role to all living creatures, driving our weather patterns, as the greatest carbon dioxide sink, providing more than 35% of the world population's daily subsistence, especially to developing countries, either as a food source of the 50% of global protein and generating globally 60 million jobs through a dynamic and steady growth economy, which reaches approximately 5% of the planet’s Gross Domestic Product.

Costa Rica covers barely 0.03 percent of the earth's surface, with 51,100 km2, including the vast breadth of both coasts: the Caribbean Sea (255 km) and the Pacific Ocean (1103 km). The nation has approximately six percent of the world's biodiversity.
