Costa Rica will have a new official port and marina at Coco Beach, located in Carrillo Canton in Guanacaste Province, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) announced.

The new Coco Marina will cater to boating, fishing, and other recreational activities, aiming to strengthen the Pacific coastal region of Guanacaste as a major hub for maritime tourism development, said the institute.

The Carrillo Municipal Council in Guanacaste has confirmed the project and approved the Association for the Development of Coco Marina (ASODEMAC) as the concessionary company responsible for the marina’s development.

The new marina will be funded by private capital managed by ASODEMAC. While the total cost of the project has yet to be determined, officials expect the port to open in five years.

The first construction phase will focus on building access roads to the marina and sea filling near the construction site. After this, work will begin on the marina itself, which will cover approximately 25 hectares and feature around 300 docking spaces for boats ranging from 12 to 40 meters in length.

In addition to the docking facilities, the project will include administrative offices, a boat storage area with facilities for dry docking and launching, a maintenance warehouse, fuel storage, a distribution dock, an ice factory, commercial areas, and parking.

The construction of Coco Marina was approved by the Interinstitutional Commission for Marinas and Tourist Docks (CIMAT). Costa Rica currently has six marinas along its Pacific coast, offering more than 1,000 docking spaces and handling over 800 boat arrivals and departures each month. About 50% of the boats in these marinas are used for sport and recreational fishing.

Tourism is a key sector of Costa Rica's economy. The country welcomed over 2.6 million tourists by air in 2024, a 7% increase compared to 2023.

The Tourism Institute (ICT), is the government agency responsible for promoting tourism in Costa Rica.
