Costa Rica was recognized as "Best Destination for Responsible Tourism" at The World Travel Market awards which took place virtually from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The World Travel Market (WTM) is an England-based travel agency founded in 1980 to carry out the first World Travel Market in London.
According to the Tourism Institute, the award is a recognition of the sustainable tourism model they have developed for more than 20 years, with the support of private companies, and also "for developing a different tourism approach, including the preservation of biodiversity and cultural heritage, " they added.
This is the first time it was awarded the category of "Responsible Tourism in Latin America" and joins other similar awards that the World Travel Market makes in London, India and, Africa.
“It is undoubtedly a great honor and pride for Costa Rica to receive this award and to be listed as the best responsible destination especially during the most historically challenging context for the world's tourism industry," said Gustavo J. Segura, Minister of Tourism.
According to Segura, the country has developed a tourism model designed to protect and safeguard the natural environment and guarantee progress in communities.
"The Institute's Tourism Sustainability Certificate is a pioneering initiative in Latin America and has shown to push the entire industry for a better and more positive impact for the social and environmental development of the country," said Gustavo Pinto, representative of WTMarket.
The WTM awards were divided into four main categories:
• The best destination for responsible tourism.
• The best in poverty reduction and inclusion.
• The best contribution to the preservation of wildlife.
• The best attraction of cultural heritage.
According to the organizers, there were 53 projects registered from Latin America of which 13 finalists were chosen for these categories.
The Costa Rican award in the category of "Best Responsible Destination" is given to destinations that use tourism to promote local development making each visit a pleasant experience for the traveler, added the institute.
WTM moved their Latin American tourism fair from April to August, to be held at the Expo Center Norte in São Paulo due to the pandemic.
