Those who
are refugee applicants or are currently
living in Costa Rica as refugees will
have access to health services in public
Social Security clinics and
hospitals. This
medical benefit is made possible through
a $1.9 million refugee collective
insurance agreement that has been
signed, for the fifth consecutive year,
between the Social Security and the
United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR). The program
allows free access to medical services
for this year for five thousand
foreigners living in Costa Rica with
refugee status or seeking asylum.
According to Social Security, the agreement is an opportunity for public health to offer dignified care with quality medical service to vulnerable populations. UNHCR is a United Nations agency mandated to aid and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, and to assist in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. UNHCR's mission includes nearly 57 million refugees as of June 2020. According to the organization, there are already more than 80 million refugees globally.
