By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The
government presented Congress with
bill No. 24.717, which allows mining
exploitation. The
bill, titled Law to Regulate the
Exploration and Exploitation of
Sustainable Open-Pit Metallic Mining,
seeks to partially modify Costa Rica's
current Mining Regulation Law No.
6797. The
law's modification seeks permission to
conduct mineral exploration of Crucitas Mountain
in Curtis District, San Carlos Canton
in the northern zone of Alajuela
Province, near the border with
Nicaragua.
If
Congress approves this bill, the
Ministry of Environment may hold an
auction to choose companies interested
in conducting mining activities in the
zone. The
chosen firms must pay the State an
annual fee of 5% of their total sales
from mining activities. The
bill proposes allocating 20% of the
State budget to infrastructural and
environmental restoration initiatives
in San Carlos Canton. In addition, the
local government of San Carlos will
get 5% of the funds to support
regional projects.
