Costa Rica has been designated as the host country of the Annual Summit of the International Association of Convention Centers in 2024.

According to the Institute of Tourism, this will be the first time that the conference is held in Latin America and will take place at the Costa Rica Convention Center, located in Heredia Province.

Representatives of 200 companies in the international conversion sector are expected to participate in the convention.

Among the topics to be discussed at the summit are cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, sustainability and the future of buildings and event organizations.

"These issues, highly relevant in the current scenario, seek to strengthen and improve the management of Convention Centers around the world," the institute said in its statement.

Some of the advantages of convention tourism are the increase in the number of tourists, the creation of more jobs, and the promotion of greater cultural exchange among others, authorities said.

In June, Costa Rica was the host country of the Megaminds in Megatrends 2023 Summit on foreign direct investment.

Participation in the summit is one more strategy to increase tourism. Recently, the institute participated in FIEXPO Latin America, the fair specializing in meetings, incentives, conventions and events, held in Panama.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. As of June, over 1.3 million tourists have visited the country. The number marks a new record compared to visitors registered in the country in the same period in 2019, the year before the covid-19 pandemic.

Last year, about 2.3 million tourists visited the country. That is one million more visitors than in 2021.
