Costa Rica, which is predominantly Catholic, marks "All Souls' Day," also known as the Day of the Dead, on November 2nd.

According to the Costa Rica Episcopal Conference, the country's principal Church authority, some individuals confuse the day with the celebrations held in Mexico.

November 1st is "All Saints' Day," followed by "All Souls Day" on November 2nd. "The church observes people who have died on both days, but with a different approach and a one-day delay between the two rites," the officials stated.

Costa Rican families traditionally attend church and visit cemeteries on "All Saints' Day" to put flowers and candles on the tombstones of loved ones who have passed away. The day commemorates all Catholics who have risen to paradise.

The next day, "The Day of the Dead" commemorates all people who have died, including those who were not baptized as Catholics.

Catholics devote themselves to prayer and remembering their dead loved ones, including those who may have been of various faiths or did not observe any religion at all.  Costa Ricans commit themselves to prayer and remembering those they have lost, especially those who were of different religions or did not practice any religion at all.

Both days are observed with great solemnity and mourning in Costa Rica. However, in certain countries, such as Mexico, this day is celebrated with excitement.

In Mexico, the day is celebrated with vibrant and meaningful traditions that honor deceased loved ones.  Families create altars in their homes or at grave-sites, decorated with photos,  and favorite foods of the departed. Streets and homes are adorned with colorful paper, flowers, and candles.
