Guanacaste is the
fourth ₡500 colones coin produced to
commemorate the country's heritage. The
first was issued in 2021 to mark Costa Rica's 200th anniversary
of independence. In 2023, a coin was released to mark Costa Rica's 175th anniversary
as a democratic republic. Also in 2023, a coin was created to honor the Army
Abolition 75th anniversary. The new collection
coin features the "500 colones" denomination with
the phrases "República de Costa
Rica" and "Banco Central de
Costa Rica." On one side it displays the
denomination 500 and the initials BCCR.
It also features five raised bars for
tactile recognition. On the reverse side, there are inscriptions commemorating the 200th anniversary of Nicoya's Annexation in 1824-2024, as well as the phrase "De la Patria por Nuestra Voluntad" or "We are part of the country by our own free will." The design features Costa Rica's geography, with the Nicoya region emphasized in green, as well as the outline of Guanacaste Province. It also includes the Guanacaste Tree as a national emblem. Additionally, it includes a mark representing the region's Indigenous peoples, and an image of a lady clothed in folk attire. The Central Bank released 20,000 collector coin boxes, which are available for around $18 at various banks, including the Central Bank, National Bank, Banco de Costa Rica, Banco Popular, BAC San José, and Banco Promerica. Collectible coins are also available in many financial institutions, including Coopenae, Coopeande, Coopegrecia, Coopeamistad, Mutual Cartago and Mutual Alajuela.
