The VI National Earthquake Evacuation Drill will take place on Wednesday, August 14, coordinated by the National Emergency Commission.
Authorities
encourage all public institutions, private
businesses, and individuals in their homes
to partake in the activity.
This year, the major activity will take place in certain cantons of Alajuela Province, such as San Carlos and Grecia, and will focus on various emergencies that have affected these communities. This technique seeks to evaluate reaction capabilities to diverse natural catastrophes.
In
these places, operations are centered on
landslide and river overflow simulators to
test a new Early Warning System set up in
the area.
The
activity's purpose is to increase the
country's reaction capabilities and give
knowledge to the public so that they may
adopt simple measures into their everyday
lives and take appropriate action in the
event of a true disaster.
Participants
in the exercise should register their
involvement via the SimulacroCR app,
accessible in Spanish on Google
Play and
the
App Store.
Using that app, individuals will be able to learn how to create an earthquake preparedness plan and safely evacuate using health recommendations during a pandemic. The program instructs participants on how to respond in the event of an earthquake. The seven phases are accessible in Spanish on the Commission's website.
The
action will be webcast on the
commission's social media
channels.
Costa Rica has 400 earthquakes each month on average, making it a country with a high frequency of this natural phenomenon, authorities noted.
The
most recent quake occurred at 11:43 p.m.
on Sunday, July 21, with a 3.8 Richter
scale magnitude, 47 kilometers northwest
of Conchal Beach in Guanacaste Province,
reported the Earthquake's Record
Institute.
