The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) announced there will not be a restriction on vehicle plate numbers in San José City during the half-year school break.

The school's middle-of-the-year vacation runs from July 1 to 12, 2024. Then, students will return to school on July 15, 2024.

The benefit will apply from July 1 to 12. Drivers with any license plate number can move on any weekday in the city.

The rule was paused when most of the public institution employees and public schools were on vacation. For that reason, it is not necessary to apply the ban-on-driving order in the zone inside San José city, known as the Circunvalación Route or Route 39, which includes all the streets that are found around the capital.

Oswaldo Miranda, Traffic Police Director, noted that the police have to distribute officers to monitor traffic on roads to beaches or the countryside because many people take advantage of school vacations to spend time away from the city.

Vehicle restrictions will resume on Monday, July 15 for vehicles with plates ending in 1 and 2, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Police warn travelers to respect the rules as they’ll be out in full force.

So far this year, more than 3,500 DUI tests were applied by Traffic Police. Of these, police identified over 687 positive DUIs.

As of April 2024, there were 156 deaths in traffic accidents. Of these, 82 were motorcyclists (54%).

Last year police reported over 500 deaths in traffic accidents. Of the total number of fatalities, 48% were motorcyclists.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) is an agency of the government in charge of roads, airports and maritime ports planning and construction. It also regulates public transportation.
