Costa Rica and Qatar reached a cooperation agreement on Wednesday, during the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's visit to Costa Rica.

President Rodrigo Chaves-Robles and Sheikh Tammin signed an agreement for a bilateral partnership in sports, culture, and diplomacy during a meeting held at Casa Presidencial in San José's Zapote District. They also established the Joint Ministerial Committee for Commercial Partnership.

According to President Chaves, Qatar's investment in Costa Rica will benefit the country. "Economists understand that investment must be proportional to a nation's savings," he added. "They (referring to Qatar) are saving a lot of financial resources from the oil and gas they produce. They export investment by investing funds abroad."

The Sheikh's agenda included unveiling a 30-foot-tall Anti-Corruption Excellence Award sculpture, installed in San José's La Sabana Metropolitan Park.

The sculpture, designed by Ahmed Al Bahrani, a modern Iraqi artist and sculptor, symbolizes combating corruption and implementing the key measures outlined in the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

"This sculpture represents this government's commitment to its fight against corruption," Chaves noted.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani became the Emir of Qatar after his father, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, abdicated in his favor in 2013. He has multiple political positions, including  Qatar Investment Authority Board Chairman

Costa Rica and Qatar began diplomatic ties in 2004. Costa Rica established its first Middle Eastern embassy in Qatar in 2010.
