According to the General Directorate of Migration, the Juan Santamarķa International Airport, SJO, located in Alajuela Province, received the Airports Council International (ACI) rate #3 in the category of best "Customer Experience."

ACI is a global trade representative of airport authorities based in Montreal. The group, which was founded in 1991, represents the interests of airports with governments and international organizations.

SJO received a score of 4.43 in the category of Courtesy and Control, which is based on thoughts about the passport review process, placing it among the 22 best airports out of a total of 71 airports examined.

The ACI research evaluates the efforts and explorations made by airport administrators to enhance the travel experience through understanding the client, strategy, measurement, operational improvement, and governance among others.

The SJO airport is one of the busiest in Central America and serves as a major hub for both domestic and international flights.

As of June, about 1.1 million tourists arrived by air, which is equivalent to 88% of the total number of tourists who arrived in the first semester of this year.

Of these, more than 75% of tourists entered the country at SJO and over 20% entered the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Guanacaste Province.

Last year, approximately 2.3 million tourists traveled to the country, which is one million more than the number of visitors in 2021.

Recently, the government and the Union of Air Traffic Control Professionals reached an agreement just in time to stop any plans for a union strike at SJO.
