The Route 27, which connects the Pacific Coast and San José Province, will reverse the driving direction of some lanes on two Sundays, July 7 and  14, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport warned.

The contraflow highway reversal rule (or tidal flow) allows for the route managed lanes in which traffic may travel in one direction, in this case, due the mid-year school break for around 1 million students.

The goal is to improve the flow of vehicles to the capital for those returning from the provinces of Guanacaste and Puntarenas after a brief vacation break.

All available lanes between the Pozon Canton toll in Alajuela Province and the Ciudad Colón toll in San José Province will go towards San José, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The highway closures will start one hour before the effective time and will end one hour later, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The maximum speed allowed will be 37 mph.

Drivers who travel on the opposite way, from San José to the Pacific Coast during the route reverse schedule, must do so by one of the three optional routes:

  •  Route 3 from the Alajuela Province cantons of Atenas later connects to Orotina and then Route 27 in Puntarenas Province.

Authorities warn drivers to consider this schedule when planning their trip in one direction or another.

For an updated route status or to request assistance call the traffic police control center line at 2588-4040.
