Residents and businesses are encouraged to recycle their Christmas trees now that the holidays are gone.

Municipalities are establishing a tree recycling program for appropriate disposal throughout the month.

Almost every municipality in the country has authorized dumping locations where trees are subsequently transported to recycling centers.

The trees are then cut into little pieces and utilized as garden ornaments, landscaping, or organic fertilizer.

The purpose of the tree-collecting program is to keep trees from falling into rivers or starting fires when they are burnt on patios, open spaces or sidewalks.

In San José Province, for example, free drop-off places are provided in San José City, Montes de Oca, Desamparados, Moravia, Goicoechea, Tibas, Alajuelita, Escazu, Curridabat, Santa Ana, and Vásquez de Coronado, among others.

Many more communities around the country are running their own Christmas tree recycling campaigns. Those who want to recycle their Christmas trees may contact their local councils.

For recycling Christmas trees, authorities request to remove lights, ornaments and tree stands, including wooden stands and nails.

This service is completely free.

The authorities plan to collect 10,000 trees.

The effort has been in place in the country for over 10 years.
