American Airlines, a renowned U.S. airline headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, has announced plans to boost its footprint in Costa Rica with a new nonstop route.

According to the airline, an extra nonstop flight will be available on Saturdays between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR), also known as Guanacaste Airport.

The flight, which is scheduled to begin in December on a Boeing 737, would provide travelers with a new route to the warmer-weather seaside location of Guanacaste.

The flight will depart from LIR at 2:35 p.m. CR time to arrive at (PHL) at 8:35 p.m. ET. From PHL, the flight will depart at 8:20 a.m. ET to arrive at LIR at 10 a.m. CR time.

AA is one of several international airlines that are boosting their frequency of flights to Costa Rica.  Last week, United Airlines announced more flights between the Guanacaste Airport (LIR) and the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), in the State of California.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. Over 884,000 tourists arrived in the country via air between January and March 2024, representing a 16.8% rise over the same period in 2023.

In 2023, the country reported a new tourism record with more than 2,4 million travelers.
