The Caribbean Coast's cruise season begins with two ships arriving simultaneously at Limón Beach Port in Limón Province.

The Viking Mars arrived with 860 passengers and 460 crew members, while the Mein Schiff arrived with around 2,800 passengers and 1,000 crew members, both from the ILG Logistics cruise line, according to the Atlantic Coast Board of Port Administration and Economic Development (JAPDEVA).

Thousands of travelers stayed in the country for around 8 hours, visiting popular tourist destinations including Gandoca-Manzanillo, Matina, Limón City, and Cahuita, among others.

According to the Tourism Institute, 94 cruise ships are expected to dock at Limón Port during this season, which typically lasts from the last week of October 2024 to May 2025.

About 95% of cruise ships stay in port for at least three days and two nights. According to officials, travelers increase coastal businesses' operations such as local tourism operators, professional tour guides, carriers, souvenir stores, and restaurants.

The institute estimates that a cruise generates more than $55,000 in revenue during their time at ports.

Last year's cruise season attracted approximately 270,000 tourists aboard 100 cruise ships arrived in Limón, reported the institute.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. As of July, over 1.7 million tourists arrived via air, representing a 13.5% increase over the same period in 2023.

The country reported a new tourism record reached in 2023, with more than 2,4 million travelers.

The state-owned Atlantic Coast Board of Port Administration and Economic Development (JAPDEVA) manages the ports on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, including Limón and Moín.

The Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT), or Tourism Institute, is the government agency responsible for promoting tourism in Costa Rica.
